I think your ETA is pretty spot on. Trump is taking a much more hands-off/managerial position this go round and not getting into the fighting around/amongst the staff.
Pete won't go anywhere unless he begins to become damaging to Trump by association. If the second signal is proven (and is as been described) that might be what forces Trump's hand, but otherwise he can still deflect/ignore it.
I think the infighting between Pete and his guys he hired then fired may become a bigger deal than the chat tbh.
