This goes back to something we've talked about a lot on the board over the years: giving war a chance. Trying to play nice and use "soft power" in dealing with the Palestinians, or the Iranians, or Syria or Iraq or Russia or anyone else going back to the founding of our country does. not. work. To quote one of the least-likeable characters from one of my favorite TV series (except Season 8--fuck you, Season 8): "POWER is power."

Sometimes you've got to let them fight it out. If the war wasn't unnaturally prolonged between the Palestinians and the Israelis though things like UNRWA, they could have sorted all of this out a loooonnnnggg time ago. If it wasn't for making bold, sweeping, bull-in-the-china-shop moves like moving the US emabassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem where it belongs, we wouldn't be in the situation we are in now, with peace about to break out between Israel and the parts of the Arab world that matter.

It's hard to overstate how completely the far left in America has fallen apart. If this continues much longer, it will be hard for them to have much of a showing nationally in the coming years.

I don't qualify my own political leanings because of stuff like this. I just found it odd that "daughter is lesbian == i lean left".. Am I supposed to be left leaning because I have two dads? but I think the point is made and don't want to drag on

This was a discussion between you and @AWP, but it's a forum so I chimed in because @AWP mentioned that he leaned left on a single issue. I lean left on social safety nets, but I am very conservative on more issues than not. It doesn't mean one leans left in his politics if he doesn't agree with his party on everything, and certain issues are partisan.

To whit; a lot of times those issues on which you break from party lines usually involve a personal connection or intense personal exposure to.

I was actually talking about more lawsuits from religious families who argue that certain classroom topics/practices conflict with their religious beliefs. I.E. a Young Earth Creationist wants to remove their child from lessons regarding evolution, or a a Muslim family saying their child cannot be taught by a woman not wearing a headcover.

Moot point, because the opinion wasn't a final decision. I missed that when I first posted.

A poll (from CNN of all places!) shows the Democratic party at it lowest popularity/favorability level ever. According to the NY Times, the DNC is in "chaos and desperate for cash."

They've drifted so far to the left that most reasonable Americans--I suspect even many moderate liberals--can no longer identify with that party. They've attracted violent, militant, anti-American fringe groups. They're burning American flags in the street. Their anti-Trump rhetoric has gone beyond Trump. Now it's downright anarchistic, full of hate for the country they live in. They're out there calling for revolution. This "Trump is trying to be King" BS is not only nuts, it's just inflaming all these marginally intelligent street clowns.

If all this is coming back to bite them in the ass, I'm good with that.

Which will force lawsuits, and then force these cases to the SC, which has been a long time coming.

Lower court judges do not tell the executive what to do. I really don’t care who it harms- left or right- it’s unconstitutional and needed corrected, and it did.

I agree with you 100%. I've always been against judges legislating from the bench. I was just pointing out that it is going to affect both sides in the short term with some unanticipated consequences. Second and third order effects are a bitch...

I understand that, I'm willing to have those rulings truncated ( I am in the 5th Circuit AO, so am safe for now) in order to preserve the Constitution.

I don't follow that aspect enough to really have an opinion, just questions. I know it and Medicare are hot items though and any cuts will instantly trigger an emotional response among some. People can also have that emotional response, "make up their minds" (for lack of a better description) and when faced with a vote that lingering emotional response will shape their answer. Humans doing human stuff, you know?

Medicaid is funded indirectly and generally used by lower income folks of any age. A lot of these people vote D or don't vote at all. I don't think it'll shake up the elections all that much, but if you start messing with retirees who are likely to vote Republican and have paid into Medicare all their lives, I think you'd see some swing.

Children are the largest enrollee in Medicaid by a large margin, I don’t think they vote. The elderly are the second largest enrollee and the largest cost to Medicaid. Cutting Medicaid will significantly curtail medical benefits to the very old and very young.
