This is out of the latest leaks but deserves it's own thread. The Canadian Armed Forces is probably in the worst state I've ever seen. And I joined near the end of what is fondly called the "Decade of Darkness", ironically when we had another Liberal government.

First, it says that Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has told NATO officials privately that Canada will never reach the military spending target agreed to by members of the alliance.

Second, the document claims wide-ranging deficiencies in Canada's military capabilities are a source of tension with allies and defence partners.

Morale has never been so low.

Throw in our entire federal public service went on strike. Including on bases. So the steam plants were shut down because the people to run it are on the picket line. So no hot water and no heat. Many of those bases are dealing with typical spring weather, wet, still cold and possibly snow. Throw in ass clowns on strike blocking traffic, including food deliveries for the mess and EMS that were responding to an accident the strike had just caused.

I have preached for years, but this is where an understanding of history plays a role.

You know why and our members know why, but the voters...

Canada's Army Is Slowly Rotting Away

The Army’s recruitment and retention crisis is a critical vulnerability. The military consistently fails to meet recruitment targets, with some estimates suggesting a shortfall of over 10,000 personnel across the Armed Forces. This is not merely a numbers issue; it is a capability crisis. Without sufficient personnel, the Army cannot staff its units, maintain training cycles, or prepare for deployments. Retention compounds the problem.

It was bad when I joined in the 90's, fondly called the "Decade of Darkness"; when we yelled "budget cuts" every time we pulled the trigger in training. Because we had no ammo, blank or live.

But it's horrendous now. Everything is being poured into Latvia and even then there isn't proper infrastructure there to support what we're sending. We honestly need to fire everyone involved in procurement and start over. Increase pay and cost of living allowances, and/or build new base housing. Streamline recruitment, so it doesn't take a year before someone has an actual enlistment date and start training. Stop the war on "toxic masculinity" and then maybe, just maybe, recruitment will increase.

I feel like this problem set doesn't exist in a vacuum.
We the people, south of the border, are dealing with this as well.
...the solution may very well be untenable
