Just finished Blood Meridian by Cormac McCarthy, highly recommend it if you're into graphic westerns with some surreal and mystical elements to it.

Thinking about rereading Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand, I understand why she gets hated on but I think its a bit of groupthink when it comes to it honestly.

Just downloaded the new Mitch Rapp book, Enemy of the State. Kyle Mills has taken over the franchise since the passing of Vince Flynn; so far I've been impressed.

Way of the Reaper, from the perspective of a Sniper in 3rd Batt.
"My Greatest Untold Missions And The Art Of Being A Sniper"

Blast the bush, by Len Beadell. Len was a surveyor, instrumental in setting up the Woomera Rocket Range during the UK/Australian nuclear testing in the 50s and 60s.
I work within a couple of hundred kilometres of where that activity took place, it's interesting to me how he deals with the extreme climate we have out here in the desert.

Im currently reading "Extreme Ownership" by Jocko Wilink and ""Beyond Band of Brothers" by Dick Winters. Both great reads.

A few things on and off.

I'm skim reading various USMC manuals, the most recent focus was the sniper one. Sadly, I settled on Scout Sniper for my character. It's not what I intended, and makes me cringe deeper at the perception of piling on more cliches. To balance out his super-dude-who-can-do-everything, I have him throwing rocks, falling on his face trying to swing a sword and...why am I reading this manual again?!

I'm still reading Dune. I have been since last year... Every time I read it, I get inspired by something, so the reading stops often. I find the fremens and the middle eastern influences most interesting. It's more an educational read, but since the father died, I've been sluggish in my commitment to finish the novel. All the other characters seem flat. I really don't enjoy Paul Attreides, the all talented super chosen kid -- kinda like my sniper guy.... I definitely got the sense that Herbert draws from sentiments of the time. Still, I should finish this sci-fi classic one day...

I'm also reading Haruki Marukumi's memoir on his thoughts on running. Basically it's the only book I can find that is an engaging read about writing and running. I was really struggling to balance my running goals with my writing goals a while ago. Basically, I can't sit still behind my desk... I read a bit of that from time to time.

I'm also reading a Peter Straub collection of horror short stories. But I only got it to read The Buffalo Hunter. Again, reading focus is limited, so a few pages here and there. I really wanted to reread this weird story from my teen years. It's about a man who's depressed, doesn't know how to interact with women and he started collecting baby bottles. It all ends badly/strangely (from memory).

Finally, I'm reading an indulgent romance featuring blue aliens. I'll not horrify people here with the detail or extend an already long-winded post any longer.

(Not spell checked. Not grammar checked! No excuses, I'm just lazy!)

The more recent Hurricanes Harvey and Irma have sparked an interest in my reading about how the Military deals with the violence of nature rather than just the violence of man. A few of the more interesting titles...So Others May Live: Coast Guard's Rescue Swimmers by Martha Laguardia-Kotite and Never Quit: From Alaskan Wilderness Rescues to Afghanistan Firefights as an Elite Special Ops PJ by Jimmy Settle as well as Steel Beach: My Life as a Naval Aircrewman by Jeff Lee Manthos.

@FrankS. Let me know who wins.

"the virgins from Haiti". Just this one page covers a couple of years of a psych Residency. I don't think I'd be able to read very much of the book:wall::hmm::-o.

I always thought Haitian mythology included vagina dentata, sort of a revengeful vagina with teeth, as in the Maori tradition, but I may be wrong.
I'm watching "teeth" on Netflix, so this reminded me of that, so to speak.

Read Norse Mythology ahead of American Gods recently. Was pretty good. On a William Gibson kick right now since it's a been about 15 years since I've last read his stuff

"Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Mainenance" has become my nightly read. I finished "Get Selected" about a week ago, and thoroughly enjoyed the insight provided.

I just picked up The essential writings of Ralph Waldo Emerson. I'm in love with Emersons work and the history around the influence he's had on a lot of American artists. This should be a good read.

I recently read "Bounty Hunter 4/3" by Jason Delgado. He talks about his time as a young hot headed Marine, failing the sniper indoc at 3/4, to eventually making the platoon and passing SSBC. He then goes on to SOTG and has a part in the creation of the sniper school for MARSOC. It was a good read in my opinion because it showed me some perspectives on combat that I had not encountered in other books and there was also some MARSOC history thrown in there for good measure.
