Gaming thread

Alright, ladies and gents. I am asking for some recommendations.

I have dipped my toe in the XBox gaming world, and it's been cool to spend some brain-break time on the sticks. (By the way, I am pretty good at online hockey now and have started playing UFC and Forza, which is a gorgeous game.)

I am looking for inputs for a story-type game to widen my experience a bit. I have heard Killzone has an awesome story and gameply, obviously I am aware of the larger titles (Fallout, Halo).

So the question is, "If you had some dork that knows nothing about gaming and you could recommend one of your favorite games so they could experience it, what would it be?"

"RDR2"

Agree with the others. Especialy if you like Western, you can't go wrong with Red Dead Redemption 2.
Generally one of the most enjoyable games I've played. Great storytelling and visually stunning. A big open world filled with encounters and events that aren't essential to the main narrative, but simply exist for when you decide to just explore and enjoy its beauty. It has so many detials that you'll miss in other games of that genre.

If you're like me and don't mind outdated graphics, I'd also recommend playing the first RDR afterwards. It's basicaly the sequel.

You prefer dystopian/post-nuclear open world settings ? then the Fallout and Metro series are great picks.

You like open world fantasy settings, the Gothic and Elder Scrolls series, especialy Skyrim are great. Oldies but goodies. Witcher 3. Fantastic game. From what I've seen, there are incredibly beautiful games coming out this and next year. I think Elder Scrolls 6 was also scheduled for 2024. Same here, if you don't mind old graphics, I recommend playing all those games from the beginning.

Medieval history buff and realism enjoyer ? Then there are some special ones for you.
Kingdom Come: Deliverence. It throws you into 15th century Bohemia and is arguably the most realistic and historicaly accurate medieval RPG. Story and characters are solid. Open world´. Intentionaly difficult for immersions sake, but once you get the hang of it, very satisfying and keeps you coming back.
Medieval Dynasty: This is prob not smth you're looking for rn and there are a lot of survival RPGs out there. But I really like this one and will throw it in here anyway. There is story here, but the focus is on economy and survival. You build your own dynasty and community with farms, crops, workshops etc. and help people out where you can/want. Has customizable settings. Its a very peaceful and fun type of survival RPG. Make your own story.
Mount & Blade Bannerlord: Now this one is a bit more on the massive, strategic scale. There is a whole world to explore. You create your own character, dynasty and followership here. But it's less about taking care of crops and farms. More about creating your own kingdom, managing, defending and expanding it. If you want that. You can also just join any minor or major faction as soldier or mercenary and spend most your time, fighting (in) their battles. Which is honestly the highlight. You can lead entire armies ( as in literal hundreds, if your rig can handle it, thousands of bodies ) in open field or siege battles, with all the appropriate historical equipment and supplies. With very decent graphics and physics no less.

Star Wars fan ? Then I recommend Jedi: Fallen Order. Haven't played the sequel Jedi: Survivor yet but I hear it has good story. I'd wait till they smooth it out though. People seem to be complaining about playability.

Witcher 3 is one of my favorite games of all time. The game does an amazing job of drawing you into the story and really plays around the idea of dealing with "grey" as opposed to black/white-good vs. evil.

Some situations in the game, I'm thinking of one specific one, do not have good outcomes. Also, the game constantly reminds you of your choices as the world shifts based on certain key events.

Both heart of stone and blood and wine were excellent expansions. 11/10 highly recommend.

Never played red dead 1/2, but I've heard they are the cowboy versions of the Witcher series. Never met somebody that didn't like/love them.

Mass effect is an oldie but goodie. I personally liked the new one that came out, but that had some mixed reviews. If you have to play only one, mass effect 2 remastered and it's not close.

Skyrim: classic. A game I still go back and play from time to time.

Destiny is great for multiplayer and you have AWP to get into it with. The game is daunting if you don't have somebody to hold your hand, but once you get into it, it's great to play with friends.

I've heard good things about plague tale 1/2, but I haven't really played them yet. Both are on gamepass and may be worth checking out.

Nice. I went with RDR2 for my first one, I really appreciate all the input. I loved the Witcher HBO series (or whatever it was on) so that’s intriguing too.
I hope you have a great time with it! It will feel like ‘forever’ before you get off the mountain and into Chapter 2, I’m literally into my 5th play through of it right now and I”ve stayed in Chapter 2 for quite a while. A ton of things you can do/collect to get a better feel for the game before you get out of Chapter 2…eleventy-billion websites dedicated to ‘what to do first’ so I won’t waste your time unless you ask, but…one tip I recommend is when you get into 2, hop a couple of trains and let them circle the map for you…opens up a lot more to see.

Have fun, and if you don’t know how it ends, avoid spoilers if you can.

Bungie just won a 16 million dollar judgement against WallHax for providing cheat software. Where it gets interesting is it was a RICO case on top of a DCMA case as well.

RICO against cheat developer. Suck it, cheaters.

So much truth in one little meme.

ETA: "Beta test? More like advanced Alpha test. The players can Beta test upon launch and we'll release a patch a month after release."

That's why I was kind of impressed with the Diablo 4 testing. Two open betas.

PC owners (I don't know if this applies to consoles or not because...I am the PC Master Race), but Red Dead Redemption 2 is on sale for 67% off the base version and 70% for the Ultimate bundle. Steam seasonal sales are usually 50% for this title.

No lie, I'm buying this even though Destiny's seasonal content just dropped and Diablo 4 is dropping in a week or two.

The sale runs through 6/15. Steam's Summer Sale drops on 6/29 so play the odds accordingly.

@Kaldak @Ooh-Rah

Chatting with my D2 clan in Discord (I DO NOT POST CLASSIFIED MATERIAL) I realized this summer is an absolute banger for game releases.
Legend of Zelda, Diablo4, Final Fantasy whatever, Company of Heroes (Did it drop already?), Street Fighter, a new Baldur's Gate... and this is on top of whatever you're addicted to playing like me plus dozens of other titles.

Then you have Steam's summer sale, whatever Epic is doing, and I'm sure the console folks will have a massive sale.

Go touch some

Steam has decided to get in on the action and now its prices for RDR2 are the same as Epic Games'.

I'll post some thoughts (as if anyone cares) on RDR 2's gameplay later this week. D2's weekly reset is today and a girl has her priorities.

Destiny 2, Iron Banner week.

I am a grown ass man yelling at my screen.

"CAP THE FUCKING POINTS YOU MORON!!!!!!!!!!!! CAP THE POINTS, DON'T SLAY OUT! YOU SUCK ANYWAY!!!!!! CAP THE POINTS, HOLD 2, GO FOR CHIP DAMAGE NOT YOUR K/D YOU STUPID FUCK!!!!!!"

Anyway, I'm going to go play some RDR2 or World of Warships.

Gamers, play the objective. Don't play for stats, play for the objective and the W. Hmph, maybe our military could learn from gaming...

@Ooh-Rah any tips on riding this goddamn horse? Is there a secret sauce or just "good luck, bitch, keep riding off cliffs until you learn"?
L O L… Here are a few tricks.

- I hit the L3 circle button occasionally to say “good girl“ give it praise. It helps build up loyalty and keeps it calm.

- once you start moving, just hold the X button down and you should continue on at about the same speed. I rarely “sprint“

- Keep an eye on it stats, you need to feed it occasionally and groom it.

- When you get off, try to find a place to “hitch“. It build stamina while it is hitched.

If you are still in the mountains and not out of the snow, yet, stick with it, I hate that part. Once you get to chapter 2, you can pretty much do whatever the fuck you want. I think this is my fifth Playthru, and I’ve been in chapter 2 for about the last three weeks. I’ve got most of the map opened up and a shit ton of side missions done.
