How are you preparing, and where do you need work?

Mentally, I feel I’m as prepared as I can be, but I may just be ignorant. But physically, I need to work on my PT. I have a minimum of 10 months before I enlist. Before then Im going to work in that until I can at least max my PT test. My current 2 miles is 16:18, push-ups is ~60, and sit-ups ~60

While you're working on those numbers you might want to start doing pullups as well. That's not part of the Army PT test, but it is part of the Ranger PT test.

Will do sir. Lucky for me pullups are a strong suit for me. Right now I can do 15 drop hang pullups until my grip wears out.

Solid number. In case you weren't already aware, make sure your palms are facing away from you.

I'm not sure if this is the proper place to put this in the group, I apologize if it's not...

I talked to my recruiter today and he said that a 68W w/ Option 40 contract is rare, that he's only seen one in his 2 years of recruiting. I told him from the beginning that I want to hold out and wait for the option 40 but he seems to be pressuring me into getting a regular contract and put in a packet for RASP once I'm in. His reasoning was that these windows for the rare contracts are only open in the beginning of the school year. Simply put, should I enlist without the option 40 or try and call his bluff? Any guidance is well appreciated.

The typical recruiter story. The number of people I've seen go through RASP after signing the dotted line is incredibly small. Just wait, he/she is full of shit. Getting the 68W Opt40 is worth it.

I told him on the phone that I’ve decided to hold out and wait as long as I have to for the contract. Thank you for the advise, Sir.

I don't mean to beat the dead horse or waste your time Sir, but a post goon175's made is a little disconcerting. At the end of the day however, I will follow the advise of you and the other mentors. Here is what he said regarding the 68w w/ option 40 contract (2011):

"Keep in mind that 68W opt 40 contracts are rarely out there, the Regiment primarily recruits its medics out of AIT now, so that they can look at your performance there and gauge your medical aptitude for going on to something like SOCM. Just something to keep in mind. If you want to go that route, and 68W opt 40 isn't available, then 68W opt 4, or even just a 68W by itself are all good options, provided your willing to EARN your spot at RASP.

If none of those are available, and your primary goal is to be in Regiment, then 11x and 13F are good choices as well. Any intel job in the 75th is usually a good grab as well. Oh, and 25C/U...if your into that kinda thing.

If you are not dead set on the 75th, then of course 18x is a good grab, as well as 89D and 35P both are good jobs that come with great benefits (actually, the best that are available right now) as well as great training."

Where is the beating a dead horse gif? We didn’t primarily recruit from AIT. Most had an opt40 when they came in. I’d wait for the contract. There’s no gaurentee it will be open in AIT if you choose to take your chances. Just so you are aware, I ran the PreSOCM program for Regt for 2 years and was the Regt PA.

You are always welcome to ask. I just wanted you to know that I do come from a place where I've seen what happens. Stay the course. There is no better job than 11B or 68W in the Ranger Regiment (bias present).

Thanks, Sir, I actually have an idea for a thread in this group regarding SOCM.

But I'm not sure, I think the Laundry Specialists take the cake for the most bad***!

Hey all, I'm currently serving in a conventional heavy unit as an FA officer. I am just about to head to Ranger School and pending graduation, I will drop a packet for the Regiment when they open up my year group. I have looked all over this site for information specifically about the day-to-day job, training pipeline, and any other information on a company FSO in Regiment. There is some info about 13F out there online but no one really talks about what the FSO does. I served as an FSO in a heavy unit for about a year and so I have some experience but from what I have been able to find, its much different than what I'm used to, being a light infantry unit primarily, and then the obvious reason that it is not a conventional force.

Any and all information is appreciated and please feel free to get in contact with me directly or if you know a current Company FSO in Regiment who might be willing to talk to me that would be great too. Thanks again.

Training for RASP. My overall muscular strength is solid, but my cardio and flexibility needs serious work. Pushups/situps/pullups no problem, but distance running is disastrous. I'm currently mixing up running at 0430 every morning with 2mi, sprints, pyramid, and working towards 5mi. Just beginning to do 12mi ruck on weekends with 35lb ruck to start.

Any ideas to help improve are welcome.

Are you saying that you’re doing sprints every morning? Or are you saying that you mix it up each day (sprints one day, distance another, etc)?

I mix it up. Mon/Wed/Fri are usually some sort of distance like pyramid running or 2-5 mile. Tue/Thu are usually sprints or some form of burst cardio.

Hey y'all, I need a little help in terms of proper preparation for the APFT and would like to ask for some advice. I scored a 256 on my last test and based on my prior scores before that test, I know I can get at least 270 or 280 if I eat properly the night before and rest. Below I've shared how I exercise and how I am preparing for the test. If y'all have an opportunity, I would like to ask if you could take a read and tell me where I can improve or if there is anything I should change in order to better myself.

-----

To start, I've been putting a lot of effort into following the BCT PT curriculum for the passed few days, but I am having my doubts as to whether or not it's enough. I do push-ups and sit-ups daily but I rotate them hourly. One hour I'll do 30 or 40 Push-ups, then the next hour I'll do 30 or 40 sit-ups. If necessary, I will take an hour off to avoid strain, or will limit the repetitions.

Every morning I do basic PT to keep myself conditioned and stretched out. Exercises include; Push-ups, Sit-ups, Planks, Lunges, Prone Rows, Russian Twists, Leg-Lifts, and Mountain Climbers.

Following PT, I either ruck or run depending on whether it's icy or snowy.
  • Yesterday I rucked for 6km and timed myself to do it in under an hour. I ended up rucking a bit further than 6km (approximately 6.3km) and I did it in 1 hour and 3 minutes. I'll be going further the next time (likely 10-15km) and will move at the same pace. My backpack has 50lbs of weight in it. I have weights to increase that number should I need to.
  • Saturday, I ran for four miles at a steady jog, as during BCT we hardly ran. I did not record my time.
  • I do not do Sprints. Instead, I run up and down a hill that's just up the street. It's approximately 200 meters from the bottom to the top and I run the hill 10 times consecutively, then I run one to two miles after that through more hilly terrain.
  • I plan to do a long, 5 mile run tomorrow in the morning should the weather allow. If not, I'll be rucking that 10km.
Along with the above, I do Crossfit regularly. My cousin rotates the exercises so it's rarely ever the same but she puts a lot of focus into cardio.

I do need to work on my pull-ups, but I don't have access to a bar except for at Crossfit, so I'm going to try to incorporate them into my workouts or just do a few sets before I leave each day.

---

I try to follow the KISS method with my exercise. I keep it to the point and focus on what I need in order to succeed in what I am trying to achieve. Right now, that's the APFT and overall fitness. If there's something I'm missing, doing wrong, or if I need to adjust something, please feel free to nitpick and share. I would greatly appreciate any advice y'all provide.

Thank you,
--Haldex
