Marine Recruiter found unresponsive in his rack at MCRD San Diego

A 21-year-old Marine recruit died after going into cardiac arrest Sunday morning at the Naval Medical Center San Diego, according to the Marine Corps.

On Saturday, Pvt. Patrick Armando Vega was found unresponsive in his bed around midnight by a drill instructor at Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego, who performed CPR until medical help arrived. He was taken to the medical center in critical condition.

Terrible. I hate hearing these stories. I think it'll turn out to be one of those stories of someone of someone appearing healthy with something undetected and under the surface that doesn't show until physical stress is applied. Very sad.

Oxnard Marine recruit died in pursuit of his dream

What a seemingly fantastic young man. The Reader’s DIgest version from what I can pull from his hometown newspaper:

- Dad was a Marine
- He could not ship last year because of physical conditioning
- Shipped this year and put into PCP right after receiving
- It does not say it specifically in the article, but reading between the lines it would appear that the Fire Watch heard him gurgling and then alerted the Drill Instructor.

As an aside, if you are that Drill Instructor....you hear the slap of the hand on the wall from the Firewatch, you initially think, “fucking, 0430 already?....wait, it’s midnight? Oh shit....this is not going to be good....”
