The Racing Thread

NASCAR shit-canned its douchebag President Steve Phelps. Hopefully, they've learned that going woke means going broke. I'm not sure they can bring it back, but reconnecting with its southern roots would be a good start.
Texts revealed he called Richard Childress a dumbass redneck who needs to be taken out back and flogged. Lol. Picking a fight with Childress and then getting canned is what one might refer to as... playing stupid games and winning stupid prizes.

I'm kind of excited to see Cadillac in F1, especially after hearing Colton Herta will be testing the car while preparing to possibly race it in the future. He's a solid, American driver.

Following all of the engine rumors and stories has been wild. For those who don't know, 2026 is a complete overhaul of the cars. New dimensions, wheels/ tires, aero rules, etc, but with the big topic being new power units. 2026 is mandating a 50/50 power split between a combustion engine and battery.

Because the dumbasses at F1 bought into the carbon footprint nonsense and pledged "net zero" by 2030. Clowns.

Anyway, engine manufacturers have had to design new power units from the ground up. Where it gets interesting is not every team has its own engine shop. You'll see Williams with a Mercedes power unit for example.

Mercedes PU:
Mercedes
Williams
McLaren
Alpine

Ferrari:
Ferrari
Haas
Cadillac

Red Bull and its new partnership with Ford:
Red Bull
Racing Bulls

Honda, moving over from Red Bull:
Aston Martin

Audi:

Allegedly, Mercedes and Red Bull have found a way to generate 15 more hp through a legal-ish way of manipulation the compression ratio. Ferrari is going with steel cylinder heads and accepting the weight/ center of gravity penalty for using steel over aluminum. The last time sweeping engine changes happened Mercedes came out swinging and won 8 championships in a row.

Teams are going to make major aero changes throughout the season, but power units? Whoever gets that right out of the gate could be a monster.

Thanks for tagging me. I think I’m going to come live in this thread for a while, the rest of the Internet has become a place I don’t really recognize anymore.

There is gun forum here that covers NC and SC. 75% are topics other than guns. The biggest thread going is about pets. That forum is my safe space.

We do. One of the reasons I love this site is the variety. Don't want politics? Fine. Talk (checking thread) racing. Or pets. Or funny memes.
@Teufel used to have a good meme game. But his memes went the same way that @AWP's smack-talking skills went,

F1: The Movie staring Brad Pitt and some people you'll recognize. A over and down the hill racer is called back for one more shot at Formula 1 glory. I'll be honest, the plot is horrible and as realistic as Top Gun or Top Gun: Maverick. Coincidently I'm sure, the director directed Top Gun: Maverick.

Familiar type of plot, nothing special, but entertaining enough. The racing scenes? The director shines through here like he did in Maverick with its flight scenes. Bangers, really, really well done, even the CGI bits. Just badass.

The plot and mechanics if you're an F1 fan...you need to suspend belief as if you think pro wrestling storylines are real. The premise, details, dialogue...Top Gun: Maverick. Do this and you'll like the film. If you can't do this, stay away. If you want pure entertainment, this isn't Maverick worthy but it tried really hard.

Bonus point for F1 fans. Lewis Hamilton was involved and it shows in two scenes: One where he leads a race and another with Roscoe (RIP). Toto Wolf is one of eleventy billion producers and makes an appearance.

3 out of 5 (only because of the racing scenes and they might push this to 3.5) crashes.
Sitting on an airplane getting ready to go to Punta Cana. It’s a featured Delta flick so here I go with my first realistic documentary into into F1!

I'm going to watch it 100% because AWP used Top Gun and Pro-Wrestling to describe its pace...
It was fun. And similar to Top Gun, where I was pretty much a pilot… err, Naval Aviator after watching it 27 times, I now feel prepared to insert myself into the racing thread.

The movie does a nice job showing how running in dirty air kills the tires, why teams obsess over the out-lap, and how DRS plus ERS isn’t magic; it’s timing. Once you factor in tire degradation and track evolution, a lot of those “why didn’t he just pass?” takes fall apart.

I enjoyed it and would recommend; probably more than 3 stars - 3.5, maybe 4 (especially given all the pure crap being produced these days). But, your Top Gun analogy is a good one. You simply have to enjoy this movie for what it is...solid entertainment. It's a great F1 marketing tool and is another gateway to bring in fans. There's really only so much you can do with a film about auto racing, which is probably why they all feel so familiar.

Don't worry, you'll get to make more Top Gun: Maverick comparisons when the sequel come out. 😉
