Fox had an interesting bit about the shutdown I didn't know. It isn't just healthcare for illegal immigrants. The standoff also deals with ACA subsidies which began with the passage of the ACA and was greatly expanded under Biden as part of his COVID response. Those subsidies are set to expire at the end of this year and that deadline was set by?
Democrats.
The shutdown is horrible for America but inevitable and Democrats are still blaming Trump? Clown shoes. No wonder places like CNN are cold to lukewarm with their criticism of Republicans. They know.
It's been primarily the ACA subsidies the whole time.
The bit about immigrants is that lawful immigrants could recieve Medicaid/medicare but the BBB removes some of those immigrants.
Starting in July 2025, Medicare eligibility is restricted to U.S. citizens, permanent residents (i.e., green card holders), Cuban-Haitian entrants, and people residing under the Compacts of Free Association. This means that lawfully present immigrants who don’t meet these criteria, such as refugees, asylees, and people with Temporary Protected Status, will no longer be eligible for Medicare.
ETA: In my opinion, it's a bad time for the Dems to be fighting over the ACA subsidies. From a strategic perspective, they should have reopen the government after a week or so and kept on message about how the GOP refused to keep them.
Come ~June/July when prices jump up, then they can force the issue. People would be more likely to support it once their health insurance actually increases.
