Hello all,

I hold both Dutch and US citizenship and am currently living in the Netherlands. Will be going to the US at some point when I'm ready. In the US I want to apply for a National Guard REP63 contract (US Army 18x equivalent).

Is dual citizenship an automatic disqualifier to become a Special Forces operator? My fear was that I because of this would not be able to get a secret clearance.

I am not willing to give up my Dutch citizenship.

Thank you,

You are correct in thinking that you cannot hold dual citizenship and get a secret clearance.

Thank you,
SF probably isn't for you then.
have you looked at the Dutch Armed Forces?

You CANNOT get a DOD security clearance if you are a dual citizen. You NEED a DOD security clearance for the Military.

I know, I was a dual citizen and had to give up my non US citizenship to get my clearance.
That is extremely unfortunate. I did not know there was a difference between DoD and State Dept clearances.

This is a true dissapointment but I thank you for answering.

At what stage would you have to renounce your citizenship? Before or after selection?

I held a secret clearance with a dual citizenship. When I needed to get a top secret I was told I'd have to relinquish my non US citizenship.

What does it matter when? You either want to go SF or not. Remember, you have a birthright to Dutch citizenship, you can always get it back when you don't need the clearance anymore. It wont stop you visiting family etc... It's just a little strange.

Really? When was that? Proper clearance or a temp one? Mine was granted around 2010.

Conditions that could raise a security concern and may be disqualifying include:
E2.A3.1.2.1. The exercise of dual citizenship;
E2.A3.1.2.2. Possession and/or use of a foreign passport;
Conditions that could mitigate security concerns include:
E2.A3.1.3.1. Dual citizenship is based solely on parents' citizenship or birth in a foreign country;

What can disqualify you?
  • You are not a U.S. citizen
  • You were dishonorably discharged from the military
  • You are currently involved in illegal drug use
  • You have been judged as mentally incompetent or mentally incapacitated by a mental health professional
  • You have had a clearance revoked for security reasons
  • You are considered a dual citizen AND you are currently holding a passport from a country other than the U.S.

Dual citizenship AND retaining a foreign passport is an automatic disqualification.

When I joined my unit in the summer of 09 I got screened for a security clearance and held it until my EAS. The fact that I was a citizen of two countries was never brought up.

Did the Corps know you had dual?

What would you do if, after you joined the U.S. Army, America went to war with the Netherlands?
Yes you get to this level of sillyness. The Dutch ain't no threat..

May be disqualifying is not automatically disqualifying right?

That wasn't even a good dodge. The issue is loyalty and commitment to the United States. You've spent your entire life abroad and have no desire to renounce your loyalty to a foreign power, yet you want the U.S. Army to provide you with the best military training available and give you access to classified information?
