Charlie Kirk shooting -

Lars Larson reported that Kimmel was told to apologize, pay money to the family (and probably a FCC fine) as the price of re-admission. "Sources" say he was livid.

We shall see how this plays out.

His show is over when the contract expires, ABC isn't making money off late night "comedy" and can't afford to keep him.
IMO, Late Night Comedy is a dying genre, the target audience watches podcasts, youtube and streaming services.

Late night used to be a staple in America but like a lot of things its time is well in the past. These programs exist as relics or a nod to a bygone era. It used to be you HAD to go on a late night talk show or Saturday Night Live if you wanted to be something in movies, TV, or music. Those days, not unlike Kimmel wearing blackface and women on trampolines, are gone. I'd wager the only reason people paid attention to them is because of the opening monologues...they watched the day after on Youtube or the like.

According to Google, I'd win that bet:

Jimmy Kimmel Ratings Over The Years: He Was No. 1 With Young Adults
Associated Press-NORC poll shows who still watches late-night talk shows

What's funny, and one I'd never guess, is the most popular late night show is Gutfeld on Fox. That show outpaces the others by around 1 million viewers a night.
Here Are Final Late Night Ratings for Q2 2025 - LateNighter

Shows that used to draw 10+ million people struggle to break 2 million these days. Fox is beating the pants off of the other channels for news and is doing the same during the late night viewer window. If the Left didn't control the media the Kimmel story wouldn't be a blip on the radar.

True its not the same but there is still an audience. People still watch late night TV at bedtime, or whatever. But whether you like the POTUS or not, I just think a lot of folks are sick and tired of hearing "Orange Man Bad" every 30 fucking seconds on every channel.

Milo is a hack, I dont think anybody actually cares about him at all, nor do I think he can have any sort of impact.

The real one to watch is Nick Fuentes, which I think @amlove21 brought up a few pages back.
That dude has gotten veeeeery good with how he presents himself in the past year-ish, so much so that most people don't know how extreme he his.
Oooooh boy I am excited about folks that don’t know who Milo is or ever seen him work getting to see those things.

Milo is a problem.

Jimmy Kimmel was fired because of his ratings. That’s it. They’re worse than Colbert on a year long slide that only got worse this summer. His prime demo numbers are lower than mid range podcasts.

The sponsors were pulling- and it had nothing to do with free speech. He can go out right now and set up a YouTube channel. I can show him how.

I'm going to a Charlie Kirk vigil tonight with my high school-aged daughter, at her request.

She asked me a few minutes ago if I was bringing my gun. This is the first time she has ever asked me that question.

She wasn't asking because she didn't want me to bring it. She was asking because she is scared. She's scared, but doing the thing anyway. To me, that's the definition of bravery.

Apple, tree, etc. etc.

Wife and I watched the service.
Some of the speakers were fantastic, a couple not so good.
Trump Jr making fun of his dad was pretty good, Trump Sr's speech didn't impress me (does he have ADD?).
Erika forgiving the shooter was powerful, she is going to be an unstoppable force.

You know what? After reading this, I'm already right there.

What you- and everyone here- should realize is that this person isn’t a bot, they’re not ‘extreme’.

There are no ‘moderate democrats’. There are people like the one you posted, and people that will abandon their morals and values to support and never condemn the radicals of their party. Thats the entire left.

There's still hope. I came across one by accident yesterday while doing some doom scrolling online. I'd gladly let him have the time of day to discuss things with. He's definitely the ever shrinking minority though.

And there's the rub with your last sentence. They'll never condemn and we'll never budge until we start seeing some humanity again from them. And that is on them to stop this divide that their side has created and not on us.

And I think your two sentences pretty clearly define my stance on this whole issue (not just the Kirk assassination, but what it means for the culture war/left and right writ large).

When you meet 1 random individual that still resembles a moral human and happens to be left of center, you SHOULD have hope. I don't, because for every one sane person that seems like they want the best for America, I can give you 10 influencers with 100K followings doing their absolute best to be the absolute worst. And while that 1 person might be good, if they're aligned to that ideology, I don't know what to tell you. Good people have supported heinous things all throughout history.

The vast majority of the left doesn't want to come to the center; they believe the "out group" (in this case, conservatives) has to be eliminated, not talked to. No one on the left is truly calling for a cooling off or an off ramp- they went right back to "everyone I don't like is a Nazi or a fascist and Charlie sort of deserved it" after about 2 seconds.

I have been giving this some serious thought. What caused it? Who is the demographic? Questions like that. Anecdotally I know quite a few older democrats (neighbors, etc) who have spoken out against the Kirk killing, even though they will still vote democrat (and not because of Trump, just because they like Big Government, Inc.). Why? Southern democrats still lean center on most topics, they don't engage social media as much, they weren't as influenced by COVID (I see a correlation between COVID and the ramping up of violent rhetoric on the left).

The radical left seems to be under 40, 45 as an aggregate, which does not bode well for the GOP in future elections, especially if any candidate has anything to do with Trump or MAGA.

I am hoping that Kirk's death isn't quickly forgotten or suppressed, but it seems that a new 'woke' right is emerging from it with the same demographics, so I see some real hope.

I'm going to come back to this and give my thoughts again.

Yesterday was supposed to be my deceased wife's 47th. I am in agony all over again and just need some quiet time.
