FOOD THREAD 1

Anyone have a recommendation for a good set of block knives for a home chef? It’s a late Mother’s Day gift plus welcome to the new house gift for the Mrs. We are on the road so just want to get it there for her before we move in later this month.

Cost is not too much a factor, just want something she can enjoy cooking with. She’s about 5’5’’ small hands.

Shun, is on my list, if Montana Knife Company never comes back in stock. You can order direct or I think they're on Amazon as well.

Wustof, I think they're sold out now but they have a block builder; you can pick what she needs or wants.

Zwilling Pro, you can get them on Amazon.

This topic can become be as divisive as as 9mm vs .40 caliber!

I grew up on Wustof knives, they are all I ever use. They hold an edge very well, and are not difficult to sharpen if you know what you’re doing. Otherwise, you can send them in to get sharpened.

Good reccomendations already from @Devildoc and @Ooh-Rah

I'll add on a tad.

First off; how "home chef" is home chef? I find most people are just fine with a "decent" set of knives. You can put a Martin D-28 in my hands and I won't play any better than I would on a Walmart acoustic lol.

If she's closer to decent, this 20 piece, self-sharpening Henckels set would be good, or this Victorinox set if you want to get her something more aesthetic. If she likes Japanese style knives/metal handles, this Global set is a good deal.

If she's closer to food network than just home chef, one of these 6 piece or 9 piece sets from Shun would work great. If steak knives are important, you could grab this Zwillings set, Wusthof set, or (on sale!) Enzo set.

wanna win Mother’s Day? Go big or go home.

One last note- the main consideration between Japanese and European knives will be the hardness of the steel. This is important for how much she (or you) knows about maintain the knives.

European- Softer steel, generally won't maintain edge as long or as sharp, but generally durable

Japanese- Harder steel, generally extremely sharp but prone to chipping if used with wrong technique/inappropriate ways.

Bought my wife a set of Wusthof knives a few months ago. She cooks a lot and she absolutely loves them.

I'll let the wife abuse my Henckels for a while longer. If we move into a bigger/nicer place next year, I'll invest. But I'll be getting a good knife wrap and putting them away, when I'm done. So she doesn't wreck them.

The German made ones? Maria wants them, hundreds of dollars.

Yes.. they are pricy but very nice. And very sharp. Our OB/GYN cut the tip of his finger off with one of his, I had to do a digital block on him, he was hurting so bad he couldn’t operate.

Just noticed you were talking about a different set of German knives 😁. But all still applies

I have an old school pair of Kreutzer trauma shears from Germany. I've cut fireman bunker suits, motorcycle leathers and everything in between.

Come on @Cookie_ no Matsato....?

Putting this here for Fodder's Day...

:ROFLMAO::thumbsup:

I clicked on the website and immediately guessed it was gonna be a set for under $100 lmao. Seems it's a Lithuanian company, probably selling stamped Chinese knives.

If you want a cool looking (cheapish) knife, may I suggest this F117 inspired Santuko?

It doesn't hold an edge like a Wusthof or Zwillings will, but this was my daily "everything" knife from about 2017-2020 when I last worked as a full time cook; it's still my go-to at home.

I got a "cheap" ($250) Wusthof 6 piece knife kit when I was in high school. Going on 17 years and the chef knife is still in my rotation.

I know they have the real German made ones and the cheap pot metal ones.

When Maria and I were at bed, bath and beyond, we saw both there. We wanted the German ones, no dice, 500 plus bucks. Lol.
