Another Pro PC argument....

Nerds: I need a monitor recommendation. I just dropped some coin on a new SLI setup, and my dinky 24" monitor is just not challenging it. It's nice and all, but I want to go big.

Really big.

The 30+ inch 4k monitors are starting to catch my eye. Dell's offering (http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00PX...ell+4k+ips&dpPl=1&dpID=31yKd2wISgL&ref=plSrch) seems to hit the sweet spot between radness and affordability, but I'm wondering if there's something else out there. Or should I do as others have suggested and wait a few more months for a new round of offerings?

You need to get in touch with @Ranger Psych

GET IT
you know you want it

besides, you *can* play for just an hour or two when you want to, not sticking in front of it for hours...

But it's on sale, it's not like you have to install it now.:-"

I have a copy, I need a joystick/ throttle combo because playing it with a mouse is a non-starter. At least Far Cry 4 is out of the way. Dying Light...I might finish it this year. Maybe.

Yes, send him a message because I'm sure he won't see this thread or anything.

I would, normally, but knowing his proclivity for Frankenstein triple-monitor setups, I'm afraid that he would try to sell me on one of those ridiculous boondoggles! I just don't have room in my life for one of those right now.

I'm only a huge nerd, not a hypernerd, after all.

Another unnamed Marine said you were caught wearing Spiderman underoos.... that makes you an ubernerd, Sheldon.:hmm::whatever:

Forget all that. Metal Gear Solid 5 is out in a couple of days (yes, on PC too), and it's supposedly friggin' amazing.

Just check out the first 5 minutes:

Check out the minigun "air raid" starting at 11:40 as well. The video basically goes through a number of ways you can approach a mission.

I just happen to have an X52 setup that I don't need due to having an X55 set. Your call, used or new. Figure $100 shipped should do? It's a good starting point, and if you use Voice Attack for more commands than I do (being a child of 2 pilots plus simming plus lots of right seat time when a job required flight for commuting and all, I prefer MOAR SWITCHEZ) you can make the "downsides" of the 52 (for me) negated, plus get that cool "talking to Hal" effect going on.

Sorta like this. Excuse the shitty sound, I didn't have my sound bar at that point and was using unpowered shitspeakers. And the 52 up for grabs is front and center as well. Delay from the command for gear is due to not wearing my headset, and instead having to yell at it sitting in front of me. That, and not having cleared the dinner plate (Nom time is mid-shift, my lazy ass didn't move it the 15 ft to the kitchen once I was off work)

4k in standard monitor sizes is a non-starter due to the fact that at a certain point, you really can't detect any higher resolution in pictures with your eyes (SGI and Apple both researched that, hence what SGI does as well as Apple Retina... can't believe I'm saying Apple has ever done anything good)

There's a couple 4k BIG displays that give you the benefit of the proper real estate while maintaining seated at desk to monitor distance resolution that's "as good as there". One such monitor is http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00SCX78JS...TF8&colid=3TRK01K622TH0&coliid=I37H1DEV6PTHH7

Simple fact is that my system was built with a specific thought process in mind for what I wanted to do, and even with modern games it still smokes. You are NOT going to be running games at 4k with everything cranked and be going to 60fps as a pretty reliable rule with anything, to include multi-SLI of the high as fuck end "why did you buy a video card that costs the same as a good computer" video cards. The only reason in MY eyes to have a 4k monitor is because it's 4k at 40" across on your desk and therefore you have proper high resolution, across the ENTIRE MONITOR, for that large of a desktop to accomplish stuff. I use my monitors for work + stupid shit + gaming + college, and sometimes intermingle all four of them in various combinations because I have the real estate to provide me the latitude to do so. I actually had intended for a 6 monitor array at one point, but necessity isn't there yet for that.

I don't have what I have to waggle E-peen at anyone, I have it because it meets the specifications that I wanted for performance. Nothing in the build is unobtanium by any stretch, although thanks to RK wanting a newer PC plus me having a grand deal, I did score a 4770K + 16 GB of ram to bring my system up to 32gb and 4.6ghz after OC'ing... for about $150-200, after I ate shipping for harder than expected. Not a feasible bitch point by any means, though... considering that the processor alone is like 300+ easy, nevermind the ram.

It is funny to rattle off specs though as well as those benchmarks and have people just going WTF.

Here, have 2 little lists I made. Pretty much my box, minor ram/vid card/processor/mobo changes but they're effectively the same, and even the "potato" one is still pretty hot shit. Throw a diff vid card on it if you want to run fancy shmancy games? you'd be rocking, although the 760 will still work goot.

Intel Core i5-4460, Zotac GeForce GTX 760, Fractal Design Define R4 (Titanium Grey) - System Build - PCPartPicker

Here's my system as close as I could get it:

You are pretty much spot on, but I wouldn't agree entirely. Here's my experience

At the moment I have 3x28' monitors with the middle one being a Samsung U28 4k. It runs a bit higher than HD with my other two monitors on desktop because Windows is crazy stupid with 4k. But in single monitor games, I can usually go to at least 3k. I can run the COD Black Ops 3 beta at 40-50fps

I tend to play most games in co-op, but here is a list of what I play at 3k and 4k
Sniper Elite 3, solid 60fps @4k
The Forest, around 40fps, so play around 3K at 70-80fps
Dirty Bomb seems locked at 60fps, but runs great at 4K
Far Cry 4, usually have to run it at 3K for 60fps
ARK: Survivor Evolved, can't get about 40fps @4K
Anything from Blizard runs 4K
GTA5

I'll say this.. I don't necessarily agree with Ranger Psych about the eyes not being able to see at 4K, just check out some of the 4K screens at Best Buy, but it's not ready for prime time in the PC market just yet. Most previous games that I can even get up to 4K resolution are buggy as shit if they weren't made to take advantage, but if they do, sometimes they don't like my triple monitor setup. You have to make sure that if you do get a 4K monitor that it's refresh rate is at 60hz or higher, and also make sure that it looks decent at whatever your other monitors are at. I find that most games will run 3K on max settings best. I really wish they would have mass produced 3k monitors.

A lot of games out there right now are shitty console ports that are framelocked to 30fps (ie.. Dead Rising 3). Sometimes this can be overcome through changes in the .ini or a program.

I use my 4K monitor mostly for work stuff between ArcGIS and Adobe CC's programs, but typically go back to 1920x1200 for every day use.

Just a quick run down of my system.
