Gaming thread

I used to read the Civfantics forums a while back and lots of people were losing girlfriends and wives over Civ4...

I mean.... over the, ehh, 5 years MC and I played EVE (I don't even remember total time in that game at this point especially since I'm not playing now, I just know I'm SuperCapital capable and own multiple dreads/carriers/etc currently mothballed with the accounts) I put in about 2-3k in monthly subs as a WAG... now if I wanted to play, I'm at the level I could fund it by playing since EVE has CCP controlled RMT through their PLEX system (you buy a in-game item that's good for a month of play for $15 or something and can sell it in-game for ISK) and I can go out and earn enough ISK by playing to buy gametime in-game... plus I have a lifetime to STO, and have a bunch of ships there as ke4gde can attest to.. but even then, that's multiple games with adding water under the bridge as far as a subscription. STO's arguably a pretty big P2W style game now, or at least "pay to cut a hell of a lot of time out of the equation" since you CAN get all the crap they offer through in-game play, it'll just take you eleventy thousand eons to get it.

Elite ain't got that. There's no P2LessTime, P2W, etc. I've bought paints since internet spaceships are serious business and I might as well look good doing it, plus in my personal opinion I think it falls under "tipping for good performance" as far as I'm concerned.

Generally speaking, I'm at the point where I'm willing to pay up front an acceptable "for the game/value" cost to play a game, but I want as minimal nickle and dime bullshit involved as possible and I also prefer to not have subscriptions based extortion involved in my gaming experience since I'd rather eat out more or do shit with the family than sit in front of the computer all the goddamn time. Consoles are basically dead to me, even with the 360, 52" tv partially because the kid watches educational stuff while we're home, and partially because I really just can't get behind anything that's come out for consoles since the Xbox/PS2. Even what I have for the 360 lost severe interest, and I'd rather sing the ABC's etc with my kid when they're on her shows while I blow things up on the computer because she's got an educational TV monopoly that shows in her grasp of all sorts of things.

I will say that I've hooked up some of the old school though, Nintendo and Super Nintendo are connected to the TV and the midget enjoys jacking Bowser up every now and then. The only thing that sucks is that you can only use the nintendo zapper with a CRT television, since it runs off of white/dark polling with an IR sensor that LCD/Plasma TV's won't trigger due to not producing significant enough amounts of IR frequency illumination for the polling to work. Alas, no duck hunt... 1st world problems, indeed.

Plus she likes to copilot with me in Elite sometimes, which is hilarious if I go triple screen since even my generally unimpressed 4 y/o goes OOOOoooo when I triple it up. "Daddy, is that a bad guy?" "Sure is" "Bad guy explode now?" "Working on it" *boom* "Yaaay!" :D

I have to wonder, are we on the way to virtual property? Do any of you recall this story from a few years ago?

http://www.smh.com.au/news/World/On...-virtual-weapon/2005/03/30/1111862440188.html

A Shanghai online game player has stabbed to death a competitor who sold his cyber-sword, theChina Daily said.
The incident creates a dilemma in China where no law exists for the ownership of virtual weapons.

Qiu Chengwei, 41, stabbed competitor Zhu Caoyuan repeatedly in the chest after he was told Zhu had sold his "dragon sabre", used in the popular online game Legend of Mir 3, the newspaper said a Shanghai court was told yesterday.

Legend of Mir 3 features heroes and villains, sorcerers and warriors, many of whom wield enormous swords.

Qiu and a friend jointly won their weapon last February, and lent it to Zhu who then sold it for 7,200 yuan ($A1,129), the newspaper said.

Qui went to the police to report the "theft" but was told the weapon was not real property protected by law.

"Zhu promised to hand over the cash but an angry Qui lost patience and attacked Zhu at his home, stabbing him in the left chest with great force and killing him," the court was told.

Flawless victory.

Oh, Steam summer sale is going on and wow are there deals to be had. Picked up the Homeworld Remastered set for about $15 and DEFCON for about a buck or two. Gonna get the Half-Life reimage called Black Mesa later this week. @Freefalling can attest to the addictive nature of a Steam Summer Sale!

EDIT:That game looks pretty good. I might just join in the fun if there is a Spear clan and enough of us play. I hate getting new games to only find a few people to play with though. These games are much more enjoyable with people you know than with PUGS.

Weird, trippy new Metal Gear Solid 5 trailer

I, for one, am excited to see what kind of crazy shit that Kojima can imagine with a ridiculous budget and absolutely no limits

I've been playing ARK: Survival Evolved a little. Set up a server and been playing a couple friends. Very system demanding
