Retention and Recruitment Crisis

Terminalcwo over on Instagram (great channel BTW) has unconfirmed reports of Hood/ Cavazos dealing with 7 suicides over the last month (which would put the base at 9-10 on the year) AND Hood being under a water conservation order, but the base is still watering a field...allegedly in the middle of the day.

The channel is a pretty solid source for what's going on in the military, so even if those numbers are off by a little or actually murders instead of suicides...Jesus.

My nephew did some time enlisted in army Psy ops, parlayed his military experience into a six-figure job with a civilian contracted agency/business that works with the DIA. He enjoys what he does, he seems to be intellectually stimulated and believe he's contributing but isn't under obligation to Uncle Sam and either uniform or as an IC employee.

Over the weekend, a young friend of mine was in NYC and hopped on the train to come to my house for a visit. He's an undergrad at one of the most elite civilian colleges in the world, and even at his young age has a profile on the world stage. I did two overseas academic study trips with him, including one to a developing nation where we had a good deal of engagement with US SOF and Embassy personnel operating in the country. He performed extremely well in both instances. He did his homework and was able to talk intelligently about a host of relevant political, military, social, and even SOF concepts and issues as they arose during the trip. He is very smart, physically fit, incredibly humble, and has great charisma. Everyone, including the SOF operators we engaged with, liked him.

He ended up staying Saturday night with us, and we talked a lot about the military and the security services. During the drive to the train station the next day, he asked what branch I thought he would be good in (Intel, of course!) and then he told me he wanted to join the Army.

...and that's where I'm in a bit of a dilemma. This guy is clearly the type of person we want as an Army officer. He's the type of officer the Army needs. But I'm torn.

One the one hand, how can I tell a young man who has enormous future potential that he should join an Army that I know is completely FUBAR at the moment... one that I myself more or less rage-quit after how Afghanistan ended and the way wokeness crept into everything? Especially when it seems more and more likely that we will soon have to fight someone who has more capabilities than EFPs, RPGs, and AKs.

And on the other hand, how can I discourage someone from doing something noble and good, and steer them away from military service, something that I consider the most important and fulfilling thing I've done in my entire life short of being a parent?

The intel services are an option, but they seem to have been completely captured by the far-left. But at least the survivability will probably be better.

I'll have to give this some thought.

I owe everything I have to the military, but it was a different time. The only thing you can really do is explain the state of the military, pass on your experiences, and let him make the final decision. There are a lot of great opportunities still available. He could take his experience to the DAF/USSF and work acquisitions. Could do his time as an Officer, make some good connections, then come back in as a non-supervisory NH-04 and carry onward.

I'm a proud lifer and I still love my Army. I will forever be grateful for what a career in the Army did for me. Even today, especially today, I wouldn't attempt to steer a quality individual away from the military. We need them. (My son is about to be an Army officer)

OTH, I would certainly do what I could to help them make an informed decision.
Looks like your son is coming over to the house on Sunday afternoon. Good times...

Also, it's incredibly unfortunate that Coach Tuberville decided to confirm service chiefs while fat Lloyd and Milley continue to break Federal Law. But hey, happy the guys who have railroaded many young Soldiers, Airmen, and Marines in their career get to have a confirmed office erstwhile the barracks and the enlisted married housing continue to rot.

"Well led?" Um, okay. Well equipped? Only because of the GWOT and how are those DFACs looking? The LCS? The -35 and new carriers were on time and on budget, right? Surely, the CJCS doesn't have a team trolling social media looking for people he disagrees with? Afghanistan went well. The JAG corps is pretty solid. The Army might finally have a PT test. Leadership doesn't approve of the drag show...so who lost their job over that? You fire leadership like its a sport, O-5-ish level at least. I guess all of the good leaders made it to O-6 and beyond? You lost a freaking airplane. Laughed at the balloon. Have taken no accountability for any of the above. Can't recruit for shit. Allowed a defective parachute to go into service which led to fatalities and injuries. Have subs that run into things. A certain base in Texas kills more people than MS13, but the leadership there has changed nothing. Your sexual assault response/ investigation is a joke. You have an entire unit singled out for war crimes, but no outside investigation. Suicides of active members are off the charts. Your mental health program exists in name and pharmacy only. Two of your most critical airframes (E-3 and E-6) have a replacement that is years away and a third (E-4) has no replacement on the radar. Barracks are falling apart. Soldiers are deploying to Europe for exercise after exercise to "deter" a country that can't beat the Ukraine. And anyone taking bets on our ability to respond to Iran and North Korea (or China/ Taiwan) at the same time?

This is straight out of the leftist playbook. Deny-deny-deny until it's too late to do anything about it, and then claim it's a good thing.

If anyone is saying that the military services are not only affected by "woke" policies but have utterly embraced them, they're not just wrong, they're lying.

I remember SECDEF Austin absolutely insisting that critical race theory, for example, was not being taught in the nation's service academies only to have an Air Force Academy professor proudly publish an op-ed literally a week later literally titled "I'm a professor at a US military academy. Here's why I teach critical race theory."

We all knew what the SECDEF was saying wasn't true. It wasn't true then, and it's not true now.

In other news, West Point has a Diversity and Inclusion minor but refused to allow the establishment of a Strategic Studies minor. Let that sink in. West Point isn't woke, but they have a DEI minor and refuse to allow one that focuses on wholistic study of strategy. Of those two, which one do you think our nation's future leaders would be better off studying?

...and the Naval Academy published a Diversity and Inclusion Strategic Plan wokeness manifesto.

Ibram Kendi's utterly racist book "How to be an Anti-Racist," in which he explicitly advocates for race-based discrimination now and in the future, to remedy past and and what he considers to be present discrimination. regularly appears on the recommended reading list of senior military leaders.

The list goes on and on. The trend lately has been to just flatly deny what we all know is happening, and to obfuscate and misdirect. Rep. Pat Ryan (D,NY), for example, says we need to focus on China. Could not agree more, Congressman! So let's do that instead of... this.

Milley should have been fired for bragging about undermining the sitting Commander in Chief, and should have resigned in disgrace after what happened in Afghanistan. Neither happened. Things aren't going to get better after he leaves, either, because the guy who's due to take over for him signed off on a memo explicitly assigning race-based "goals" quotas for the Air Force.

Recruiting is in the toilet. We're on the verge of conflict with Russia and possibly even China. And we haven't won a war in decades. But hey, at least our military isn't woke!

Something dawned on me this morning: my post above was from memory. I say that not as a flex, but the amount of shit I didn't need to look up on Sweet Baby Angel Google is staggering; I just read a lot. Imagine what it looks like for someone who documents or catalogs our military's misdeeds. You know, someone with stats who can probably make it worse than what the entire forum could collectively recall...and that should scare the shit out of us.

It also shows you how biased and out-of-touch fatty is with his force, and the next guy won't be any better.

I don't know if you were referring to the GAO report that dropped last week, but...holy fuck, DoD. Leaders should be ashamed, but instead are...well, we know what they are.

Troops plagued by filthy conditions, squatters in military barracks: report

Military Barracks: Poor Living Conditions Undermine Quality of Life and Readiness

DOD assessments of conditions are unreliable. GAO observed barracks that pose potentially serious health and safety risks—such as broken windows and inoperable fire systems—and that do not meet minimum DOD standards for privacy and configuration. Thousands of service members live in barracks below standards, according to officials.

The snippet above doesn't do the report justice on what the GAO found; The report is actually a lot worse.

I was, alluding to it. But as you know, the FOGOs will fund their shiny buildings to a far different standard than they will fund housing. General theme probably since the last 150 years. You know, the saying of "if the Army wanted you to have a wife, they'd issue you one". That was effectively real, I'd need to do some research, but when posts were significantly smaller and on the "frontier" only Officers and Senior NCOs were allowed to be married. Not saying we should revert to that model at all, more saying that the Army hasn't ever truly cared about young Soldiers being married or the happiness of their families. As much as young LTs and Commanders try to show they do care about the welfare of their young Soldiers. Does the machine care? No it doesn't.

/End rant?

I am all in on this post.
