A question was posed to me recently, the gist of which was, "Should America be focusing on spreading democracy, or is it more to our benefit to spread 'rule of law?' "

What do you think? Give your opinion, your reasoning, and contemporary or historical examples to support your point of view.

Why does the USA have to do either?
Some would consider that a form of imperialism.

That asked, I think if one is to be followed it should be 'rule of law'.

Democracy needs law and order and an educated populace able to sustain it.

An examples of democracy that have been/are disasters, pretty much all of Africa, Afghanistan, Pakistan.

Democracy is overrated and not for all.
A society needs to develop and mature before it is able to join the rest of the civilized world.
Until then benign dictatorships and a developing rule of law will suffice.

Pardus is right, democracy is a Western concept for the most part. Like many Western concepts (like, don't be corrupt), a lot of countries just aren't ready for them.

It would be. If you look at (almost all) the countries that have embraced democracy they've all had their origins in Europe.

First, people need to figure out that WE AREN'T A F***ING DEMOCRACY!! We're a Contitutional Republic. Duh...

Then we can answer the real question, "is it pur job to tell others how to live?"

U.S. Constitution: Article IV, section 4.
The United States shall guarantee to every State in this Union a Republican Form of Government
.

Republicanism is a form of democracy in itself. I don't know of anywhere in the world that practises the pure form- it's just not practical.

Personally I'm just anti-pardus coming to power. :D

You know it's going to happen, just relax and enjoy the ride

Trust me, the benefits will out do the negatives.

Govt subsidized alcohol, legal hookers, 2nd amendment will be make rock solid and non reviewable and will be applied to other allied countries.

NZ will have it's defense budget increased 10 fold from oil money taken from Iraq and Iran after we take 100% control.

Islam will loose all rights as a religion and will be declared a cult.

Porn will be granted rights.

Bacon will be officially worshiped by the state as mana from heaven.

Show me a downside!

Pardus, I keep telling you that this dream state of yours exists already. It's called NEVADA.

Democracy is a form of political organization in which the members of the political organization pretend to listen to the people they pretend to represent.

"And it was under Wilson that the first great propaganda slogan was coined and emblazoned everywhere, to make Americans start thinking favorably of democracies and forget that we had a republic."
-Robert Welch

"In a republic, that paradise of debility, the politician is a petty tyrant who has to obey the laws."
-Emile M. Cioran

Find me a job and I'm there...

The Governor is on his way out. You could be Governor Hades. Then I could have you ignoring me instead of him. That man is almost as arrogant as POTUS.
Oh and my vote is for rule of law. Crawl before you walk.

Republic being a rule of law.

Democracy being a rule of the people.

Now how in the fuck are they one in the same?

And it was very practical for the republic of the USA in the days of 1800's
