Super Sweet Movie Discussion Thread

On vacation and its Spooktober right now so diving into the horror movie genre. Started off with The Ritual, and I'm gonna have to give it a hard pass. It tries to emulate movies like The Wickerman (the original), Midsommar (and other Folk Horror) as well as a little bit of The Blair Witch Project.

While at the same time missing what makes those movies actually enjoyable. The acting is pretty flat throughout I feel especially with the lead (Jack? Jake? I've already forgotten and I literally just watched the damn thing.) and you get a buildup throughout the movie asking will they make it out? Will they survive? With zero payoff in the end. I'm cool with cliffhangers but there needs to be an obvious build to a sequel, this just pulled a Soprano and cut to black.

4/10 and as the French say, des ordures.

I really enjoy when directors try to reproduce horror movies along this angle, since there is so much untapped material in regional folklore to work with that flows so well into horror.

Midsommar was a fun trip. I appreciated the attention to detail and refusal to soften the more visceral elements of some real pagan practices for the audience. It was also funny seeing William harper as one of the backpackers - I kept expecting him to have Chidi moments throughout the film, though I suppose he did when he started getting suspicious.

I enjoyed The Witch more, thematically, but I felt there were better ways they could have ended the movie on an ominous note than that.

The original Wicker Man is one I've sorely neglected watching, so I'll try to squeeze it in soon.

Seems my gut was right on this one.

If you're looking for more suggestions, 'The Invitation' was an unexpectedly good film with less of a supernatural bent. Do not read any reviews or anything about the movie to avoid important spoilers - just start watching it on Netflix.

The Haunting of Bly Manor (unrelated storyline 'sequel' to The Haunting of Hill House series) so far is also good, if slower-paced than the first season.
