I’m not super sure I get the ‘it’s becoming a distraction’ thing, although that seems like a nice thing to believe. His whole value prop is exactly that.

As stated previously, why select a candidate with drama when other equally qualified candidates without drama likely exist?

Exactly. Everyone knew the reaction and the way forward when the name got dropped. So why bounce now? As for a larger plan- I am going with Hanlon's Razor on this one.

It's much easier to assume incompetence (i.e., the Trump team knew it would be contentious, but not this contentious, and they flexed when presented with the real challenges) than it is to assume a 7d chess move, which simply don't happen.

ETA- I am also willing to entertain the possibility that the investigation/report had enough allegations in it that even if false, would have taken too long to discount. The allegations didn't work in 2021, dropped in '23, resurfaced here- no clue. We might never know now.

Paoletta seems to be a solid, if not safe, choice. I would get behind that. But, like some of the other selections, I'm sure there are candidates that aren't really on the radar.

So far, Gaetz is the only selection that really gave me pause. I'm not looking for safe either, I'm looking for competent. Paoletta checks that box for me.

The real interesting question is this: So, what about Gaetz - what's next?

I have to believe there's a long game of some sort being played here. He already resigned his seat. Can he "unresign"? Does he even want to? If not, where does he go. You know he's not going to just fade away.

What if his resignation was simply a way for the ethics inquiry to go away? The nomination of Gaetz provided excuse for him drop his House seat, thus effectively ending the ethics investigation. Could it be as simple as that?

If Gaetz returns to Congress, presumably the inquiry can as well. Instead, he takes some other cushy Washington job? Maybe some other appointment that doesn't require congressional approval? That's my bet.

In the world we live in - those cackling hens on 'The View' - Raychill Madcow - Sean Hannity - and pretty much ANY late night talk show host - all of these hacks fill that void as our modern day muckrakers.

They pretend to be serving the public by asking hard questions - digging into peoples privacy in the name of opposition research - smearing public figures using their platform - and ALWAYS hiding behind the first amendment when they tell their lies.

A guy like Gaetz could make a pretty decent paycheck just by stirring up shit. Who knows, maybe he could even fill Hegseths seat on Fox & Friends.

So THIS is the space I think is very interesting.

The Dems have beaten the conservatives to the punch here (because conservatives have this nasty habit of thinking there are rules, and standards, and norms, and customs and stuff).

Personalities like Maddow, Joe Scarborough and wife Mika, everyone on the View, all of MSNBC, activists like Joy Reid and Jen Psaki, Cenk from TYT (until VERY recently)- they are unrestrained by things like "the truth" or "morals". They get on TV, make HEINOUS allegations they then have to walk back, but that doesn't matter. A lie flies around the earth 2 times before the truth even gets out of the gate.

Keeping in line with my current vibe (You don't make peace with evil, you destroy it) and to take a page out of @Blizzard book- don't hate the player, hate the game. And in this case? Just even the playing field.

Don't worry so much about reporting "the truth", just have a show where you can say/imply the most heinous things about AOC, Jeffries, Biden, the Clintons. You don't need valid sources, you don't need proof; you can just speculate. Let them deal with the turning out of their pockets.

Just imagine the wailing and gnashing of teeth when a nut ball like Gaetz goes on TV "during his prime time TV slot" and starts saying that the people wanting all the abortions are the pink haired fatties that nobody wants to impregnate in the first place...

His brand of crazy would be so much better than just having a dude with a hippy necklace and a wild hairdo preaching about the possibility that ancient aliens helped shape the modern world.
