Your 2024 Presidential Election Thread

hm...
Do people really have to believe these accusations with blind faith?
Or is it far more important that they just silently accept the narrative without question?
To some it really is selective listening. They want it to be true because it supports their narrative.

They just cannot let the other side have a win even when the other side is the winner and in the right. They have this diabolical and maniacal need to argue with the other because they cannot handle the cognitive dissonance that's going on with themselves over it.

In certain circles it's called irrational political immaturity.

"Centrist" is typically what you call a politician that you're trying to get elected. But there are no centrists in contested national-level elections.

I don't like to presume to speak for any other fellow member, but I don't think anyone would ascribe that sentiment towards you. I read it as a broader observation.
I certainly don't, speaking for me, @Cookie_ I've said it before and I'll say it again- we may disagree violently on any number of topics, but you're a welcome voice here.

You just have bad ideas sometimes and I am going to wear you down until you agree with me :ROFLMAO: (kidding, kidding).

His stated reason - wanting avoid his confirmation being an unnecessary distraction during the Trump/Vance transition - is refreshing to hear from a politician.
Least surprising news of the day.

As stated previously, why select a candidate with drama when other equally qualified candidates without drama likely exist?

Now, let's see who the real candidate is.

I’m not super sure I get the ‘it’s becoming a distraction’ thing, although that seems like a nice thing to believe. His whole value prop is exactly that.

Bets on who gets the nod here?

Gaetz, Trump, Trump's advisors...they aren't dumb. Gaetz resigned from the House and Stevie Wonder could see the nomination's controversy from a mile away. Now Gaetz resigned because of the distraction? They don't give two shits about controversy or distractions or much else.

Where is this going? I cannot believe this isn't part of some larger plan.

Exactly. Everyone knew the reaction and the way forward when the name got dropped. So why bounce now? As for a larger plan- I am going with Hanlon's Razor on this one.

It's much easier to assume incompetence (i.e., the Trump team knew it would be contentious, but not this contentious, and they flexed when presented with the real challenges) than it is to assume a 7d chess move, which simply don't happen.

ETA- I am also willing to entertain the possibility that the investigation/report had enough allegations in it that even if false, would have taken too long to discount. The allegations didn't work in 2021, dropped in '23, resurfaced here- no clue. We might never know now.

Ah yes. The rarely seen victory pat on the back for sniping from the sidelines. Let's get you in the game! Who you got for AG? Mike Lee? Paoletta?

Hey, a win is a win. I'll take them whenever and wherever I can get them. 😁

Paoletta seems to be a solid, if not safe, choice. I would get behind that. But, like some of the other selections, I'm sure there are candidates that aren't really on the radar.

This made me lol. Well done. I don't want safe choices, FTR.

Don't hate the player, hate the game.🙂

So far, Gaetz is the only selection that really gave me pause. I'm not looking for safe either, I'm looking for competent. Paoletta checks that box for me.

The real interesting question is this: So, what about Gaetz - what's next?

I have to believe there's a long game of some sort being played here. He already resigned his seat. Can he "unresign"? Does he even want to? If not, where does he go. You know he's not going to just fade away.

I would venture to guess that due to the open seat, DeSantis just gives it back to him. Or, he's installed into an open senate seat somewhere.

What if his resignation was simply a way for the ethics inquiry to go away? The nomination of Gaetz provided excuse for him drop his House seat, thus effectively ending the ethics investigation. Could it be as simple as that?

If Gaetz returns to Congress, presumably the inquiry can as well. Instead, he takes some other cushy Washington job? Maybe some other appointment that doesn't require congressional approval? That's my bet.
