Not Work Safe .

Jada has alopecia which allegedly causes hair loss. (I say 'allegedly' because I'm not looking it up, am not a doctor, and don't care if that's true).

If you think a woman gaining weight is emotionally traumatic, one losing her hair is devastating. Whatever Will and Jada's past, Rock would have touched a major nerve with a couple where the woman is dealing with hair loss.

Will's delayed reaction, the laughter...c'mon man. No one's been so shocked by something they didn't laugh at first, a sort of nervous chuckle as their brain processed WTF just happened? No one here has paused to take stock of something major and out of the blue? Putting myself in Will's position, I don't think his response is unusual.

With that said, a slap like that is a good effort. It is demeaning to the one slapped...you don't think enough of them to throw a punch. Counterpoint: if I might take a charge for battery on a fellow entertainer, potentially ruining my rep and future in that field, after a comment that likely traumatized my wife (degraded internationally and live in front of her peers)... a motherfucker has to hit the floor. "This is the way."

Will's tearful apology afterwards...weak, but whatever. Own the moment. Go full Nathan Jessup.

Awards shows and Hollywood are a joke anyway. Now future hosts will "uber-vanilla" their monologues to avoid this sort of altercation. This incident could without exaggeration be one of the last "wow" moments in the Oscars' history as viewership declines and people lose interest.

Agreed on both parts. I have to wonder if this gives ‘Hollywood” the perception that they have the right to assault someone who makes fun of them…which is pretty much everyone in my circle of friends.

The only thing that could have made that more entertaining was if it had been Ricky Gervais (whom I find very funny), just so the next day I could watch Twitter blow up demanding that Smith be charged with a Hate Crime since Gervais is white.

100% chance that at sometime in the near future you will see a prominent comedian work the phrase “black on black crime” into one of their bits based on this incident.

It's all fun and games until the joke is directed at you, or someone (or something) you care about. I thought joke was very, very mild compared to what I've heard other celebs say on similar shows.

Will Smith should have been arrested on the spot. Not only did that not happen, they allowed the show to proceed as if the assault didn't even occur? In an age where someone says "I don't feel safe" over someone's words is often enough to get them banned from an event, it seems the height of hypocrisy to allow someone who actually attacked someone else physically to continue on as usual.

As if laws apply to the rich, powerful, or famous...

Assault laws don't apply, and apparently if you're a celeb you can't get, or spread, COVID either. At least in NY.
Rock said he didn't want to press charges, so they're be no point in arresting him. Of course, Rock could change his mind then Smith gets charged. A bigger penalty would be for him to get kicked out of the academy or forfeit his Oscar.

I also thought the joke was pretty mild but considering the hair loss is the result of a medical issue (autoimmune disorder), it was a low blow. But Smith had no right to strike him. I actually ended up feeling a little sorry for Smith because the greatest night of his career will always be tainted by his own stupidity.

The Prosecutor can still lay assault or battery charges, especially with video evidence.

I wish they would have beat each other into unconsciousness. If either of them were men, they would have done it on the street where nobody could have saved either one of them. Now they get tons of free press. Actors....

Something my wife just brought to my attention and all the more reason I really think Rock should have taken a beat down and not a slap:

Look up his documentary "Good Hair." I'll quote from the Wikipedia writeup: "The film focuses on the issue of how Black-American women have perceived their hair and historically styled it. The film explores the current styling industry for black women, images of what is considered acceptable and desirable for Black-American women's hair in the United States, and their relation to Black American culture."

Good Hair - Wikipedia

You can google for other info, but Rock knew exactly what he was doing. He can eat a big bag of dicks. He picked on a woman with a medical condition and that's okay because he's a comic? If your wife was in the same boat, you're going to be good with the joke?

Yeah, nah.

I was once given several thumbs down on this site because I got butt-hurt that people here were were in agreement with a comedian making fun of someone with Tourettes - which my son has. So, if that's the case...I don't get what y'all have against this...it's comedy after all...right?
