Gaming thread

After a bunch of weekends and my entire spring break, finally finished 'Horizon Zero Dawn'. Game just reinforced my love of redheads.

When things slow down a bit I'm going to pick up 'Ni no Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom'. If you are a fan of Studio Ghibli character design and music scoring you might want to check it out. It's on steam for the master PC race as well...:ROFLMAO::p

Side note: you posted that meme on what now?

Guys, take a look please?

15 year old son wants his first gaming computer. Budget is about a grand. My gaming days are long past me....what say you on the stats of this one?

The only change I'd make it spending the extra $350 to get a Geforce 1080. That'll will be able to play most everything currently out there, as well as games for the next few years. Do you have a monitor already?

Sort of. To take the greatest advantage of your hardware, you'll want at least a 1080p monitor (i.e. capable of displaying 1920x1200 at a minimum) with a high refresh rate. You can get pretty good monitors for around $200-300, or less if you don't mind buying used.

Personally I'd say go for the 1070 it offers a nice bump in gaming quality from the 1050 without being such a kick to the dick that the 1080 is. All the while still being able to play every game out on ultra with great framerate, don't get me wrong the 1080 is a fantastic card but it's meant for enthusiast machines playing 4K etc. I'd argue dollar for dollar the 1070 is better.

Not a quality one. Forgive the ignorance, is it going to matter?

Like @Salt USMC said, sort of. Generally you want a 1080p monitor, your refresh rate is where you start to see massive differences in quality. A monitor with a 120hz refresh rate is going to look silky good damn smooth, I mean it's crazy how nice those look. BenQ is a solid brand that makes quality monitors.

But there is also nothing wrong with a 60hz monitor either, it all depends on your price range.

Go as big as you can out the gate, as then it will last the longest. I only do serious upgrades/system redo on, oh, about quadruple the average life cycle of a console... Going as big as you can for the best value is by far one of the best things ABOUT going PC versus being stuck with the Macs of the gaming world.

OR, you can piecemeal it together, using it as a learning and bonding experience, and celebrate conquering the electron afterwards.

Personally @Ooh-Rah one of my favorite memories with my dad was building my first computer with him, up their with learning to drive, fish, hunt etc. Listen to the man with the Santa Sasquatch avatar.

Even 1060 is a good jump in perfromance for the money. It just depends on what you're willing to spend. 1070 is best (a 1080 has drawbacks as already mentioned), but the 1060 is very solid. It will be relevant for several years, especially if you don't mind dropping down a bit in video quality with games two years from now.

^that is the computer I own. I bought it shortly after getting married this past summer because of the bang for buck+rating on Amazon. At the time I bought it, it was cheaper to buy this version than to build it myself because the GPU market is inflated, like Raptor said, and Cyberpower buys in bulk.

The AMD RX in my computer is roughly 77% faster than the Ti-1050. The AMD is also roughly 200$ more expensive on the open market.
UserBenchmark: AMD RX 580 vs Nvidia GTX 1050-Ti

The Intel i5-8400 is the newer generation of intel cores and is roughly 27% faster than the i5-7400. In spite of this they apparently cost the same.
UserBenchmark: Intel Core i5-7400 vs i5-8400

Personally, I would buy the Cyberpower PC, save yourself some $$$, and if you really want the i5-8400 just sell the i5-7400 that comes in the system for roughly the same price, and upgrade if you want the 27% faster speed. Also the red lights are pretty nifty when you light the system up.

Thanks for the feedback on this everyone.

Mike's been saving for nearly 2 years and got to $1k. His mom and I chipped in the additional $350 and upgraded to the Geforce 1080. To say he is excited would be an understatment. :-)
