Since being awarded the Silver Star, MSgt Roger Sparks and his guys have been open and honest about the situation on the ground during those hours. Sparks is characteristically blunt and honest about his thoughts and feelings. Everyone who thinks, "I wonder what goes on in the mind of a guy that's in that situation?", this is a great read for you.

Well done to all involved.

"I thought: we only had seconds to live; what do I do next?'" Sparks said. "And it went on like that for two and a half hours."

That was a pretty amazing read. A few heroes in that chapter in history. Great work by MSGT Sparks, Capt. Bailey, and the Pavehawk crew. I am glad they lived to have their story told. RIP to the fallen 11.

Awesome story, 2010 was a very violent year in RC-E. I remember passing off the alert to Roger and crew from Alaska.

The guy that shot in the face that asked for the cigarette, was Sgt Medlin, what happen was a miracle, as he was returning fire, a round came in and hit his buffer spring assembly as it was engaged, the round bounced back into his, and his weapon not operational from that point. The guys by the tree, was Spc Crespo, Pfc Pinsky, Spc Botaglila, They all suffered concussions. From Abu 1/327 infantry. Thank you!
