Retention and Recruitment Crisis

I was going to post this in the covid thread, it discusses the court martial of WO James Topp that marched across the country to bring awareness to the vaccine mandates within the CAF. But the discussion is pretty broad and frankly shows the toxic leadership and environment that is causing our retention and recruitment crisis.

Canadian military veteran who criticized COVID-19 vaccine mandate pleads guilty

Edit: I've had time to absorb this more. I've never been so angry. Political staffers used vaccine mandates, real and fake sexual assault victims for political gain. In turn they have destroyed the Canadian Armed Forces. My children will never serve, if I can convince them of anything.

Dude I don’t mean to be rude but your military is trending into cuck territory. Hope it works out for you.

They're just following the examples of our fearless leaders. Trudeau or the actual CinC, King Charles.
The only troops I know left in, have to pay for kids in school or are paying alimony to wife number 3+. Every week I hear of some new bullshit.

F-me running but am I glad I was stationed in Okinawa in the 90’s. It was like living in Animal House and Porky‘s just about every freeking day; I stayed for 3 years.

Now Sergeants need to carry Libbo-cards and Corporals are making friends with Privates just so they can head out to BC street.

Marines in Japan Ordered to Follow New Leave Rules After Reports of Misconduct

The new policy, which was issued by Lt. Gen. James Bierman Jr. on Dec. 11, requires all sergeants and below to carry liberty cards while on short, authorized periods of leave -- also known as liberty. It also requires all corporals and below to take a "liberty buddy" with them when drinking off-post, a policy that was nixed last year.

Don't rape or assault the locals and you can be treated like an adult.

So this story is going viral on the "x" formerly the "twatter".

What I would like to say is some of our enlisted cohort on the "x" have built fandom out of being professional victims. In fact the Army and the service in general has a lot of professional victims and many of them prance around as influencers on social media. They often complain about the conservatives on "x" too.

However, that's way too much context. This story is going viral, yet there have been many other ways for the Sergeant First Class to have raised her GT score in her 14 years she's been in the Army. Not saying she's one of the professional victims. But as a staff and senior NCO she chose not explore those opportunities and now becomes a "success" story for BSEP. Which is good and stuff. But the two times I was a PL, I and my platoon sergeants worked very hard to have Soldiers use their opportunities to raise their GT scores so they could be eligible to attend schools. This was also without the old FAST classes, but we tried to make sure our soldiers enrolled and went to those as well.

I'm not sure how she made it into BNCOC and ANCOC with a GT score of 87.

Apparently she retook it and got a perfect score?

If you read that thread. Theoretically you can have a GT score of 205. I don't think anyone has ever had that. I've seen many GT scores from smart Troopers in the 150s. 144 is just the highest BSEP has ever seen. I had guys in the 120s who did FAST classes, night school, whatever to raise their score because the SGM would have random requirements for guys to go to Airborne, Ranger, or SFAS.

Most people with GT scores below 90 are either dumb as a box of rocks...or they do the work as a SPC to raise their score. So the fact that we're celebrating something routine like this kind of annoys me. And I also don't think there would be such an article if it were a male. Any male wouldn't have been given the opportunity to be a senior NCO.

I dropped out of high school in 10th grade. I was dealing with a lot of domestic violence issues at home and I let that emotional response dictate my path. Didn't apply myself. Didn't go to school. I should've been arrested for truancy. The online schooling that I took to graduate was more of a...bare minimum standard to get through. No math higher than geometry. I did a single history course in three days. I ended up graduating a year late because I dragged my feet on English. I say that to say this...

I went into the recruiters office and I scored a 74 on my ASVAB, with 116 as my lowest score. I cannot comprehend how people go in and fail.

The best part is what her soldiers must think: inspirational story or "Jesus Christ, I'm working for THAT? Anyone can make E-7".

And you can judge anyone by almost any standard if you want...it is called an Order of Merit List. A commander can add whatever categories they like to rack and stack their soldiers for schools, deployments, whatever. PT, weapons qual, a board, ASVAB, volunteer hours (yes, this is used in some places), etc.

Her story sounds a little sus, but whatever.

Maybe I'm an asshole here, but study for the ASVAB? Nothing wrong with the American educational system, folks!

I was fucked up when I took the ASVAB in high school. Legit under the influence. Still got a 120 as my GT score. Actually enlisted when I was 24. Retook the ASVAB, landed a 130 for my GT after being out of school for five years.

Either she was under supreme stress when she took the test, or she measured the fucks she gave for that test in degrees Kelvin (absolute zero). If she made a 144, good on her. Sounds like she earned it once the stress was off her shoulders

yep - that shitty GT score and the inherent cultural bias of standardized testing is to blame for her making the same rank is the same amount of time as most of her peers across the DOD

pfft - whatever

Hey dude, she was a Guardsman and wanted 7in7...the more I read through that story the more I have to say she's full of shit. A career 42A? That got an AGR slot with a shitty GT score? And she didn't do what she needed to do to raise her GT score and still made SFC? Why are we cheering someone on who had every resource, whose job it was to know exactly how to do that? Ick. But hey we won't call people out.

Change for promotion for Marine Corps first lieutenants in order to retain:

Marine 1st lieutenants will have smoother path to captain promotions

This is what we do in the Navy. Unless you're an absolutely awful ensign, and just a slightly less absolutely awful JG, lieutenant (O3) is automatic.

Shit must be dire if the Marine Corps is dropping "career designation" for first Lieutenants. Always found that interesting. But it also sounds like they're doing away with the additional board process. Wonder if the Army is going to return to No Captain Left Behind of the GWOT 2006-2012.

The O3 board thing is stupid IMHO. I mean, at 4 years in you are just barely learning your job. And it aligns them with navy officer promotions which SECNAV has been after for a while.

It’s harder to make Sergeant now than Captain. Says a lot.

In the Navy it was always harder to make E5 than it was O3. No, we did not have boards, but we did have tests in other requirements. There were no such requirements for O1/O2/O3. At least for us to trade off was we got a crapload of collateral duties as an officer, much more so than I ever had as an NCO.
