Super Sweet Movie Discussion Thread

Saw Logan today- I don't fawn over actors/performances/movies too often, but holy SHIT did Hugh Jackman just define that role. I presume that I will live long enough to hear/see someone reprise the Wolverine role in one way or another, but he is hands down the only one that should be allowed. That movie, and his performance, were just amazing. There should be a 10 year retirement of that character to truly appreciate how well Hugh Jackman did.

Sir Patrick Stewart was amazing as well.

I don't think I want to see any superhero movies that aren't R rated anymore.
I would put my money on more X-23 movies. That character has an equally dark life (aside from Wolverine killing all the X-Men). They crossed out of Wolverine territory and into Old Man Logan on this one. As long as Stan Lee is around I don't think we'll see another Wolverine movie.

Logan was amazing. It's in the same category as Deadpool, Dark Knight and Civil War in that it's not a good superhero movie- it's just a straight up good movie. Honestly I will be surprised if Patrick Stewart doesn't finally get an Oscar nomination for his role as professor X. Hugh killed it (literally) but Sir Stewart made that movie.

Anyone see Kong yet? It's getting decent reviews.
I saw Kong. It didn't really do it for me. I saw it in 3D at the IMAX and I fell asleep. A few neat scenes, but all in all nothing really happens. They go to an island and then they leave an island ( most of them). The 3D wasn't impressive either. A lot of choppy frames when the camera was moving.

I saw Life

Easily one of the best Sci-Fi / Thriller movies I've seen in a long fucking time. Its right up there with Alien and Prometheus.

My general opinions of the movies I've seen lately:
  • Beauty And The Beast - I went to this because my wife wanted to see it, but going in I thought the CGI looked like garbage in the trailers and the story would probably mutate into something not even close to the original Disney version. I couldn't have been more wrong. I thought the film was really well done. They re-did some of the original scenes shot for shot, while adding some scenes that enriched the original story rather than take away from it. The set design was nothing short of incredible, and I wouldn't be surprised if they got an Oscar nom for production design. If you aren't a fan of musicals, than this may not be your cup of tea.
  • Kong - Not a fan. Some of the cinematography was cool, but the writing was cliché and generally terrible. Writers who have never been to war tried to philosophize about it, and at some points I was embarrassed for them. There was some military stuff that guys with our background will pick out as completely unrealistic, but that wasn't the worst aspect. Just...the writing... ugh.
  • Logan - I won't rehash everything you guys said above, but I feel the same. This is the movie the Wolverine character deserved. Incredible to watch and Jackman will go down as the best to play the role.
  • John Wick Chapter 2 - Loved it. You could really tell the work that that not just Reeves put in, but even the extras did. This movie sets the standard for action on the big screen, and the story wasn't terrible either.
  • LaLa Land - Again, if you don't like musicals, this won't change your mind on the genre. It was incredibly well done though. It was homage to LA and the starving artist trying to make it in that town, which is why it killed at the awards shows. It blows my mind that a 31 year old directed this. The music was good and Gosling/Stone were an impressive duo, not that I expected any less.
Power Rangers is on my to-do list, and I'm anxiously awaiting Wonder Woman as well as Justice League. I'm a big fan of Chris Pratt as both an actor and as a person, so I'm excited for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 to come out. Ghost In The Shell has piqued my interest, I'll try to get to that as well once it comes out.

Because of the Vince Flynn tie in, I'm hesitantly looking forward to this movie. Not looking forward to how Hollywood likely dumbed down the story and...and...and obviously the producers did not take the time to watch either John Wick movie and learn how an action movie is supposed to be shot.

Especially the gun scenes. Sheesh. To add....that might leave a mark!

So I saw Fate Of The Furious last night, the latest incarnation of the Fast & Furious franchise. I want to preface this review by saying I don't go to these movies expecting Oscar fodder. Nope, I'm here for cheep thrills, explosions, and the occasional G-string.

But WTF!!?? Did they just say 'fuck it' and completely give up on this one?
  • The dialogue was terrible. The whole movie was just a series of cheesy one-liners, no substance whatsoever.
  • The capture and use of an EMP was a central plot point, yet the writers/director apparently have no idea what an EMP does. Now, not usually a big deal... but it was a central plot point, so maybe they could have been bothered to check Wikipedia or something?
  • The plot was extremely disjointed at several points. There were entire sequences that made no sense in the narrative arch.
  • The product placement was over the top. Like, they didn't even try to make it blend in. Half of the first act was funded by the Ministry of Tourism in Cuba (I assume).
One positive comment: The prison break scene was bad ass.

Just finished watching the new Netflix movie Sand Castle, it's pretty good.

Meet The Army Vet Who Wrote 'Sand Castle,' Netflix’s New Iraq War Drama

I started a new post for this cause I was a dummy and couldn't find this one. Can one of the Staff delete that one in General Discussion?

Well now it looks like i will have to add something else to my list of Netflix films to watch. I really like what Netflix has been doing lately, specially the new rating system they got now with the thumbs up/down % match deal. thanks @RackMaster for that preview you posted.

If you saw Passengers, you might enjoy this video. Personally I agree 100%

Over 1M views already....

I saw Get Out and Guardians of The Galaxy 2. Get Out was amazing, Guardians was decent.

To the divers on the board -

Best guess...based only on what you see in the video, how long would these girls last at 47 meters? And even on the way up, wouldn't they need at least a couple of decompression stops along the way?

I like a good suspenseful movie, but give me at least a little realism that makes me believe you made a half-ass-effort to research the basics and make a better movie.

47 feet is not super deep but they wouldn't last long in a panic. How long your air lasts depends on how rapid and deep you breath. Also a safety stop is always recommended but if you ascend from only 47 feet slow enough you could be ok. One thing I have always noticed about SCUBA in movies is that they make it look easy and don't pay attention to the details.

Btw, I am PADI rescue diver certified
and have a few dives under my weight belt.

If they were at 47 meters they would definitely need a deco and the air would have been gone in minutes! I just caught the title..my bad. Yeah...that's ridiculous.

I can imagine the producers pitching this movie-
"Ok remember 'the Shallows'?"
"Yeah"
"Well... what if we added a hot chick and-"
"So there's TWO hot chicks?"
"Yes. And we put the whole thing under water this tim-"
"SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY!"
