Add on: When I was studying anthropology and archaeology, I read a paper on totems and how they played a symbolic meaning in unifying people and tribes together. When tribes and peoples are conquered you destroy their symbols and thus sever the unifying element that banded them together.
This thinking goes all the way back to the standards carried by roman legions, portable battle shrines carried by religions in the far east, or even the carved wooden totems of the America's.
