Hmmm, you know assassination attempts are common place for POTUS on both sides. Obviously the shot to the ear was pretty damn disappointing for all security personnel involved. However, with the new found fist in the air sensationalism. Is it possible that any and all common place threats, are being, well idk, over sensationalized, because you know, we are talking about a dude who is master at manipulating the media and you know, kinda keeping himself in the headlines. Maybe even bad news is great exposure, or something like that?
The problem IMHO, is kinda the same as school shootings. The media, social media, cheese puff eaters in the basement, all making a ruckus over the event, tend to encourage copycats... Hints why, once upon a time, the USSS never publicized assassination attempts until well after it happened and in many cases never alerted the public at all.
I got no dog in the fight, I am not for either Kamala or Trump. But it seems to me this stuff is pretty straightforward. I mean the USSS got it wrong for a umpteen years, so now they need to restructure? The FBI is feeding Intel and intentionally allowing threats on their radar run a muck? I would think some loose lips would have sank that ship by now...

Of all the presidents, presidential candidates, and former presidents who have been assassinated or attempted to be, all were Republican except one, Kennedy. I am not saying that as to imply some larger picture, just an interesting bit of trivia.
Yeah, I posted "attempts" meaning unsuccessful attacks. It's just as common for Democrat POTUS as Republican POTUS.

Political banter, but interesting that the state would pursue criminal legal actions. This doesn't sound like your normal joint federal, state, local government investigation stuff.

Maybe, sitting in hide (a bad one), setting up plates for protection, and a go pro, with a rifle...and not pulling the trigger because USSS engaged him....that could probably be classified as an attempt.
But just planning, maybe buying gear, some overt surveillance...etc....probably are just plots.

To add to this, even though Kennedy was a democrat he was an ardent anti-communist, shot by a guy with extreme left-wing tendencies.
RFK was shot by a Palestinian.
Both Kennedys were essentially conservative when it came to foreign policy.
I need some coffee for this response, but I admittedly painted with a narrow brush. My poorly stated point is you'll see "plot to kill" and "attempt to kill" thrown around in the media for a number of important figures. We, the general public, should probably put a bit of intellectual energy into what's reported vice what happened. This guy was an attempt, but I'll bet a dollar "plots" and "attempts" are overstated in the media and by people who should know better, but need clicks on their platform.
Nobody got anywhere close to Obama. You know how I know? Because they'd be talking about that instead of what they should be talking about when a guy put a rifle barrel through a fence a few hundred yards from Trump.
