The US and Russia haven't had diplomatic ties for a long time. You have to look at these initial meetings as just that, US and Russia reconnecting. Then Ukraine can be included. But technically Zelensky would be breaking his own decree by attending talks. He made it illegal to negotiate with Russia. He also canceled his initial scheduled meeting.

Plenty of back channel and no effective sanctions. But if we read through the ISW reports, although Russia continues to advance the cost is incredible. The issue is Ukraine is reliant on volunteers which says a lot. If they went full mobilization it would be interesting, but would need time and space to train.

Either way, we've let other people have their wars and supported some of them for over a decade if it suited. But without turning off Russian LNG we allow the Russian economy to continue.

How does talking with our enemies do anything, we haven't brought them to their knees when we have the power to do so. Cut the LNG off and this ends.

I agree with that, but I also don't think we should be talking to Putin either. There is no deal here. If we want Ukraine's raw materials we can get that without the Communists.

There's going to be a lot of pressure for either Ukraine to cut a deal or someone else to step in and fill the gap America is apparently about ready to create.
